The rise of phone use on the go: Risks and legal implications
A recent SWOV report found that more and more road users are using their phones while traveling.
Risks of phone use on the road
A study conducted on behalf of insurer Interpolis shows that using cell phones while driving poses several risks. For example, there has been an increase in the number of adults playing games while driving or cycling. The percentage of adults who gamble while cycling has increased from 4.3% in 2017 to 13% in the past year. Among motorists, this percentage even increased from 3.3% to 11.4%.
In addition to gaming, people are increasingly taking photos and videos while driving. This trend can be seen among both cyclists and motorists. With the rise of online meetings due to the corona crisis, people are also increasingly finding meetings taking place while on the road.
Legal implications of phone use on the road
However, the report also highlights the legal aspects and possible consequences of phone use while driving. Since July 1, 2019, for example, it has been illegal to hold a phone while cycling, with a €160 fine as a penalty. Motorists even risk a €420 fine if they are caught with a phone in their hand.
